Monitored natural attenuation to manage PFAS impacts to groundwater: Potential guidelines

نویسندگان

چکیده

Practical guidelines based on a three-tiered lines of evidence (LOEs) approach have been developed for evaluating monitored natural attenuation (MNA) at per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)-impacted groundwater sites using the scientific basis described in companion paper (Newell et al., 2021). The applies direct measurements indirect measurements, calculations, more complex field modeling methods to assess PFAS retention subsurface. Data requirements LOEs quantifying both vadose saturated zones are identified, as 10 key MNA questions tools that can be applied address them. Finally, list potential enhance is provided where alone may not effectively manage plumes. Overall, practical framework result efficient, reliable management some provided.

Barrier-controlled monitored natural attenuation.

Three existing technologies (source containment, source reduction, and monitored natural attenuation) are integrated in barrier-controlled monitored natural attenuation (BCMNA)--a new approach for managing plumes of contaminated groundwater and remediating contaminated sites. The basic BCMNA concept uses a low-permeability, nonreactive barrier to release contaminants into an aquifer at a rate t...

Prevention Strategies and Guidelines to Manage Obesity in Children and Young People

Obesity in children and young people is a significant public health issue. It can be associated with adverse health, economic and social implications. It is argued that preventing obesity needs adaptation to a healthy lifestyle, which includes behavioral modification, reduction in sedentary behavior, changes in nutrition, managing stress and increased...

A Deterministic Approach to Evaluate and Implement Monitored Natural Attenuation for Chlorinated Solvents

Brian B. Looney A US EPA directive and related technical protocol outline the information needed to determine if monitored natural attenuation (MNA) for chlorinated solvents is a suitable remedy for a site. For some sites, conditions such as complex hydrology or perturbation of the contaminant plume caused by an existing remediation technology (e.g., pump-and-treat) make evaluation of MNA using...

Natural Attenuation Potential of Cyanide in Groundwater Near a SPL Landfill

Spent pot lining (SPL), a waste product containing cyanide, has been deposited in a landfill at an aluminum refining site in British Columbia (Canada). Since the capping of the landfill, a continuous decline of the cyanide level in the groundwater was observed for more than a decade, suggesting that natural attenuation might be taking place. The information gathered from a critical review of th...
